Our nation is rapidly approaching a point from which there’s little chance to avoid a financial collapse. The heart of our problem can be seen as a tragedy of the commons. That’s a set of circumstances when something is commonly owned and individuals acting rationally in their own self-interest produce a set of results that’s inimical to everyone’s long-term interest. Let’s look at an example of the tragedy of the commons phenomenon and then apply it to our national problem.

Imagine there are 100 cattlemen all having an equal right to graze their herds on 1,000 acres of commonly owned grassland. The rational self-interested response of each cattleman is to have the largest herd that he can afford. Each cattleman pursing similar self-interests will produce results not in any of the cattlemen’s long-term interest — overgrazing, soil erosion and destruction of the land’s usefulness. Even if they all recognize the dangers, does it pay for any one cattleman to cut the size of his herd? The short answer is no because he would bear the cost of having a smaller herd while the other cattlemen gain at his expense. In the long term, they all lose because the land will be overgrazed and made useless.

We can think of the federal budget as a commons to which each of our 535 congressmen and the president have access. Like the cattlemen, each congressman and the president want to get as much out of the federal budget as possible for their constituents. Political success depends upon “bringing home the bacon.” Spending is popular, but taxes to finance the spending are not. The tendency is for spending to rise and its financing to be concealed through borrowing and inflation.

Does it pay for an individual congressman to say, “This spending is unconstitutional and ruining our nation, and I’ll have no part of it; I will refuse a $500 million federal grant to my congressional district”? The answer is no because he would gain little or nothing, plus the federal budget wouldn’t be reduced by $500 million.

Other congressmen would benefit by having $500 million more for their districts.

What about the constituents of a principled congressman? If their congressman refuses unconstitutional spending, it doesn’t mean that they pay lower federal income taxes. All that it means is constituents of some other congressmen get the money while the nation spirals toward financial ruin, and they wouldn’t be spared from that ruin because their congressman refused to participate in unconstitutional spending.

What we’re witnessing in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal and other parts of Europe is a direct result of their massive spending to accommodate the welfare state. A greater number of people are living off government welfare programs than are paying taxes. Government debt in Greece is 160 percent of gross domestic product. The other percentages of GDP are 120 in Italy, 104 in Ireland and 106 in Portugal. As a result of this debt and the improbability of their ever paying it, their credit ratings either have reached or are close to reaching junk bond status.

Here’s the question for us: Is the U.S. moving in a direction toward or away from the troubled EU nations?

It turns out that our national debt, which was 35 percent of GDP during the 1970s, is now 106 percent of GDP, a level not seen since World War II’s 122 percent. That debt, plus our more than $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities, has led Standard & Poor’s to downgrade our credit rating from AAA to AA+, and the agency is keeping the outlook at “negative” as a result of its having little confidence that Congress will take on the politically sensitive job of tackling the same type of entitlement that has turned Europe into a basket case.

I am all too afraid that Benjamin Franklin correctly saw our nation’s destiny when he said, “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”

Barack Obama gaffes again on the  world stage

President Obama has a long track record of insulting  the Poles. In 2010 he chose to play golf on the day of the funeral of the Polish  President Lech Kaczynski, the Polish First Lady, and 94 senior officials who  perished in the Smolensk air disaster.  Eight months earlier he humiliated Warsaw by pulling out of the  agreement over Third Site missile defence installations in Poland and the Czech  Republic. And last night Barack Obama caused huge offense in Poland by  referring to a Nazi death camp in Poland as “a Polish death camp” while awarding  the Presidential Medal of Freedom to a Polish resistance fighter. As ABC’s Jake Tapper reported:

Poles and Polish-Americans expressed outrage today at  President Obama’s reference earlier to “a Polish death camp” — as opposed to a  Nazi death camp in German-occupied Poland.

“The White House will apologize for this outrageous error,” Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski tweeted. Sikorski said that Polish Prime  Minister Donald Tusk “will make a statement in the morning. It’s a pity that  this important ceremony was upstaged by ignorance and incompetence.”

The president had been trying to honor a famous Pole, awarding  a Presidential Medal of Freedom to Jan Karski, a resistance fighter who sneaked  behind enemy lines to bear witness to the atrocities being committed against  Jews. President Obama referred to him being smuggled “into the Warsaw ghetto and  a Polish death camp to see for himself.”

The Obama administration has tried to downplay the incident. According to ABC:

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a  statement, “The President was referring to Nazi death camps operated in  Poland. The President has demonstrated in word and deed his rock-solid  commitment to our close alliance with Poland.”

Weasel words from the White  House will do little however to calm Polish anger. After all,  these were carefully scripted remarks by the president reading off a  teleprompter. Six millions Poles died at the hands of  Nazi Germany during World War Two, including three million Polish Jews during  the Holocaust. The president’s use of the term “Polish death camp” is hugely  insulting to the Polish people, and will reinforce the growing image across  Eastern and Central Europe of an American presidency that cares little for key  US allies, especially against the backdrop of its controversial and weak-kneed “reset” policy towards Russia. For a US administration that likes to boast of “smart power,” this was an act of staggering historical ignorance as well as crass insensitivity.

“The  Fountainhead” is to “Atlas Shrugged” what “Animal Farm” is to “1984.” Just like “Animal Farm” is not about farming, “Fountainhead” is not about architecture – it is about socialist ascent.

While “Atlas Shrugged” is all the rage these days – and appropriately so – I strongly suggest that anyone  who is truly   interested in defeating Obama in November read “The Fountainhead,” because  it  subtly lays bare the Obama playbook.

However, at some points, subtlety gives way to blunt  frankness – the gloating revolutionary. In this case Ellsworth Toohey, the  socialist villain, spells out several ways of accomplishing  a socialist  takeover. I urge you to read this  carefully – I will reproduce his words, in relevant part,  in a manner that constitutes “fair  use.” If you read and understand  these points, you will  know – in your own way –what you can do to defeat  Obama and socialism in  general.

From “The Fountainhead”:

If you learn how to rule one single  man’s   soul, you can get the rest of mankind. It’s the soul, Peter, the soul. Not whips  or swords or fire or guns.  That’s why the Caesars, the Attilas, the Napoleons were fools and did not last. We will. The soul, Peter, is that which can’t  be ruled.  It must be broken. Then there’s another way.

Kill by laughter. Laughter is an instrument of human   joy.  Learn to use it as a weapon of destruction. Turn it into a  sneer.  It’s simple.  Tell them to laugh at everything. Tell them that  a sense of  humor is an  unlimited virtue. Don’t let anything  remain sacred in a man’s soul—and  his soul won’t be sacred to him.  Kill reverence and  you’ve killed the hero in  man. One doesn’t reverence with a giggle. He’ll obey and he’ll set no limits to his obedience—anything goes—nothing is too serious.

Dutifully following the    Alinsky   model  of  chaos-anarchy-nihilism and    psychological projection   (assigning your  true  evil    motives to your enemies), Obama’s  policies   have  purposely   exacerbated our  economic crisis to   Great  Depression  levels and  has started  America toward  a    Marxist, European-sstyle    health-care    system.

Here’s another way.

This is most important. Don’t allow men to be happy. Happiness is  self-contained   and  self-sufficient. Happy men have no time and  no use for you. Happy  men  are free  men. So kill their joy in  living. Take away from them  whatever is  dear or  important to  them. Never let them have what they  want. Make them  feel that  the  mere fact of a personal desire is  evil. Bring them to a   state where saying ‘I  want’ is no longer a  natural right, but a  shameful  admission. Altruism is of  great help  in this. Unhappy  men will come to  you. They’ll need you. They’ll come for  consolation, for support,  for  escape.  Nature allows no vacuum. Empty man’s  soul—and the  space is  yours to fill. I  don’t see why you should look so   shocked,  Peter.

This is the oldest one of all. Look back  at   history.  Look at any great system of ethics, from the  Orient up.  Didn’t  they all preach  the sacrifice of personal  joy? Under all the  complications  of verbiage, haven’t  they all  had a single leitmotif:  sacrifice,  renunciation, self-denial?  Haven’t  you been able to catch  their theme  song—‘Give up, give  up, give up, give up’? Look at the moral  atmosphere of   today.

Everything  enjoyable,   from  cigarettes to sx to ambition to the profit  motive, is  considered  depraved or  sinful. Just prove that a  thing makes men  happy—and you’ve  damned  it.  That’s how far we’ve  come. We’ve tied happiness  to guilt.  And  we’ve got mankind by the  throat. Throw your first-born into  a  sacrificial  furnace—lie on a  bed of nails—go into the desert to  mortify  the flesh—don’t   dance—don’t go to the movies on  Sunday—don’t try to get  rich—don’t  smoke—don’t  drink. It’s all  the same line. The great line.  Fools  think that taboos of this   nature are just nonsense. Something left  over, old-fashioned.  But  there’s always a purpose  in nonsense. Don’t  bother to  examine a folly—ask  yourself only what it  accomplishes.  Every  system of ethics that preached  sacrifice grew into a  world   power and ruled millions of  men.

Of course, you must dress   it   up.

You must tell  people   that  they’ll achieve a superior kind of happiness by  giving up  everything  that makes  them happy. You don’t have to  be too clear  about it. Use big  vague words. ‘Universal  Harmony’—‘Eternal  Spirit’—‘Divine Purpose’  —‘Nirvana’—‘Paradise’—‘Racial Supremacy’—‘The  Dictatorship of  the   Proletariat.’

Internal corruption.   That’s   the oldest one of all.

The farce has been going on for centuries and men   still  fall  for it. Yet the test should be so simple: just  listen to any  prophet and  if you hear him speak  of  sacrifice—run. Run  faster than from a   plague. It  stands to reason that where there’s  sacrifice, there’s  someone   collecting sacrificial offerings. Where there’s   service, there’s someone  being  served. The man who speaks to you  of  sacrifice, speaks of  slaves and masters.  And intends to be  the  master.But if ever you hear a man  telling you  that you  must be  happy, that it’s your natural right, that  your  first duty is to   yourself—that will be the man who’s not  after your soul. That  will be  the  man who has nothing to gain  from you. But let him come and  you’ll  scream  your empty heads  off, howling that he’s a selfish  monster.So  the  racket is safe for many, many centuries.  But here you might  have   noticed something. I said, ‘It stands to  reason.’ Do  you   see?

Men have a weapon against   you.   Reason.

So you must be very sure to take it away from them.   Cut  the  props from under it. But be careful. Don’t deny  outright.  Never deny  anything  outright, you give your hand  away. Don’t say  reason is  evil—though some have  gone that far  and with astonishing  success. Just say  that reason is limited.   That there’s something  above it. What? You don’t  have to be too  clear about it  either. The  field’s inexhaustible. ‘Instinct’—‘Feeling’—‘Revelation’—‘Divine    Intuition’—‘Dialectic  Materialism.’ If you get caught at some  crucial  point and  somebody tells  you that your doctrine  doesn’t make  sense—you’re ready for him.  You tell  him that  there’s something  above sense. That here he must not try to    think, he must feel. He  must believe. Suspend reason and you play it   deuces  wild. Anything  goes in any manner you wish whenever you need  it.  You’ve got him. Can you rule a thinking man? We don’t want  any  thinking   men.

WAUKESHA, Wisc. — “WALKER   2,  UNION THUGS 0” blared the legend on  one  sign  outside  Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s election night  headquarters  here.  The  reference was obvious:  In  defeating Democrat Tom  Barrett for the   second time since their  initial race for governor in  2010, Walker had just   survived a  nationally watched recall election  launched by organized labor   and  done  so with a handsome 53  percent of the vote.   As  midnight  approached, the overflow  crowd of Walker’s  admirers spilled out  of the Expo  Center into its  parking lot  and awaited the governor’s arrival  to claim    victory.

Actually, the crowd had a lot more to cheer about  than   Walker’s two wins at the polls. Along with his triumph Tuesday,  four out of  five  other Republicans under fire in the Badger State  survived  labor-backed  onslaughts and won handily.

Before that he was director of counseling for ACORN Housing in  Chicago and operations manager for a Chicago ACORN offshoot called Affordable  Housing Centers of America (AHCOA). His strong ties to ACORN make him a suspect  candidate to handle such a huge amount of taxpayer dollars.

That’s putting it mildly. But then, the same goes  double for Obama himself.

The Obama-tied community organization supposedly shut  down after a series of exposés about its illegal activities, including  fraudulent voter registration drives and involvement in the housing market  meltdown. Read all about it in Judicial Watch’s special report, “The Rebranding  of ACORN.” The legal scandals led Congress to pass a 2009 law banning federal  funding for ACORN, which for years enjoyed a huge flow of taxpayer dollars to  promote its various leftwing causes.

However, the Obama Regime has  ignored the ban. This constitutes the massive theft of public money. If the media establishment were the least bit responsible, the  Moonbat Messiah would be on his way to prison in the familiar Illinois political  tradition, rather than possible reelection.
