Canelo vs Williams Undercard: Jhonny Gonzalez to Face Daniel Ponce De Leon

Daniel Ponce De Leon will get another title shot when he faces Jhonny Gonzalez on September 15.

Jhonny Gonzalez will defend his WBC featherweight title against Daniel Ponce De Leon on September 15 in Las Vegas, part of the pay-per-view undercard for the Canelo Alvarez vs Paul Williams show.

Gonzalez and Ponce De Leon are both multiple-time, multiple-weight titleholders, and both currently reside in the 126-pound division top ten. What makes it even better is that good action is to be expected, and this could be a show-stealing fight that makes the PPV fee look better.

Gonzalez (52-7, 45 KO) won the WBC belt in April 2011, defeating Hozumi Hasegawa in Japan by fourth round stoppage. He followed that up with a series of fairly easy defenses over journeymen Tomas Villa, Rogers Mtagwa, and Roinet Caballero, before facing and defeating ex-titlist Elio Rojas in April.

Ponce De Leon (43-4, 35 KO) failed in his last bid for a world title when he was rather easily routed by Yuriorkis Gamboa last September, but he's won two straight over Omar Estrella and Chucky Lazcano since then.

Both should, on paper, present a serious challenge to the other man. Gonzalez is a terrific, well-rounded fighter, but he's got a glass chin that has let him down several times in the past, and while Ponce De Leon is slow and plodding, he can crack. Ponce De Leon has adopted a bit more of a boxing approach rather than his old wild-swinging, slugger ways, but I wouldn't be surprised if for this fight, he looks to turn up the heat on Gonzalez and get to that chin early and often.

If he can't do that, Gonzalez could win this one going away, and let's not forget that Jhonny can punch, too. In other words, this is a really good fight with plenty of possibilities.

YO LE VOY AL JHONNY GONZALEZ, A PESAR DE SU QUIJADA DE CRISTAL, Ponce se ha visto muy lento, y como que Gonzalez ya aprendio a no dar distancia, como tambien lo he visto mas rapido; el buen trabajo de Don Nacho se ve en Gonzalez.
