Last month there was much criticism over the fact that President Obama agreed to give Brazilian Owned Oil Company Petrobras up to $10 Billion Dollars to look for Oil off the Brazil Coast. This was especially disturbing when you consider that they Administration objects to the US Drilling off its own coast, which will work toward keeping the price of oil low and help wean us off foreign oil.

Why would the POTUS pay for a foreign country to drill for oil but object to his own country taking advantage of his own country’s resources? Payback.

Last week Hot Air discovered that “coincidentally” just a few days before the announcement of the US Oil Exploration Aid, Friend of Barack, George Soros, set himself up to make a lot more money from Brazilian Oil Exploration:

His New York-based hedge-fund firm, Soros Fund Management LLC, sold 22 million U.S.-listed common shares of Petrobras, as the Brazilian oil company is known, according to a filing today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Soros bought 5.8 million of the company’s U.S.-traded preferred shares.

Soros is taking advantage of the spread between the two types of U.S.-listed Petrobras shares, said Luis Maizel, president of LM Capital Group LLC, which manages about $4 billion. The common shares were 21 percent more expensive than preferred today, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. …

Petrobras preferred shares have also a 10 percent additional dividend, said William Landers, a senior portfolio manager for Latin America at Blackrock Inc.

“Given that there will most likely never be a change in control in the company, I see no reason to pay a higher price for the common shares.” Brazil’s government controls Petrobras and has a majority stake of voting shares.
NICE! Making money on the spread, and putting himself in a VISITA UNIVISION.COM PARA MAS INFORMACION to make more money from higher dividends just before all the big bucks “donation” from President Obama. Soros must be master of the deal or Obama is the master of the quid quo pro.

President Obama is adept at rewarding those who put him into office. And hard-left financier George Soros is emerging as a leader of the patronage pack.

A payback to Soros was due. As the chief moneyman behind left-wing political action committees like MoveOn.org, Soros, an early supporter of Obama, played an instrumental role in drumming up voter mobilization and political advertising on the novice candidate’s behalf. In no small part, Obama’s triumph in the Democratic primary over better-known rivals was a testament to Soros’s deep pockets and his political commitment.

Now it’s time for Soros to collect on his investment. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the Obama administration has committed up to $10 billion to Brazil’s state-owned oil company Petrobras to finance oil exploration off of Brazil’s coast.

Yet Obama historically has opposed expanded oil drilling. This was not only a strategic decision, aimed at pleasing the environmental Left, but also a personal choice, since Obama sincerely believes that drilling is deeply destructive to the natural environment. Thus, as a Senator, Obama voted against permitting the U.S. to drill for oil and natural gas in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on the grounds that it would be a crime to despoil such “beautiful real estate.” Similarly, during last year’s presidential campaign, he warned of the “environmental consequences” of oil drilling, and insisted that “we cannot drill our way out of the [energy] problem.”

But apparently George Soros can. The president has elected to help another nation with the same type of drilling that he opposes so vehemently for this country, and the reason seems to be Soros’s $811-millon investment in Petrobras. The company just happens to be the largest holding in Soros’s investment fund. Soros’s connection to the company is no secret; he has been investing in Petrobras since 2007. A profitable venture, Petrobras has estimated recoverable reserves for the so-called Tupi oil field of between 5 and 8 billion barrels. With his billion-dollar loan, Obama has taken patronage politics to striking new level.

The Petrobras loan may be a windfall for Soros and Brazil, but it is a bad deal for the US. The administration is prepared to lend up to $10 billion to a foreign company to drill off its coast, when it could bring in $1.7 trillion in government revenue, as well as create thousands of new jobs, by allowing drilling off the coast of the United States.

This is no empty speculation. The American Petroleum Institute estimates that oil exploration in the U.S. could create 160,000 new, well-paying jobs, as well as $1.7 trillion in revenues to federal, state, and local governments, all while fostering greater energy security. Federal data from the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of Interior says the U.S. has enough oil and natural gas to fuel more than 65 million cars for 60 years, and enough natural gas to heat 60 million homes for 160 years. In fact, the government estimates that there are 30 billion barrels of undiscovered technically recoverable oil on federal lands currently closed to development. But rather than investing in the country’s energy future, the administration seems to be offering an expensive kickback to a political ally in a time of economic recession and high unemployment.

The oil deal stinks for other reasons, as well. For instance, there is the rank hypocrisy of Soros – an enthusiastic proponent of global warming theory and environmental liberalism – investing in the fossil fuels whose use he otherwise condemns – and doing so in part with the aid of taxpayer funds. For years, Soros has urged the adoption of a global carbon tax that would punish companies that contribute to global warming. But that didn’t prevent him from plowing money into Petrobras.

The cozy Soros-Obama alliance goes beyond favorable oil deals. It’s also playing a role in the health care debate. Huge demonstrations dedicated to enacting Obama’s universal health care are largely a Soros-financed operation. When tens of thousands of people rallied in the nation’s capital in support of Obama’s health care plan, the demonstrations were organized by Health Care for America Now! (HCAN), a new national grassroots movement of more than 1,000 organizations in 46 states encompassing 30 million people dedicated to winning health reform now.

The “grassroots” organization appears to be more like a gang of interconnected ultra-liberal pressure groups. Among the 21 members of its steering committee are such Soros-funded groups as ACORN, MoveOn.org, and the Center for American Progress (CAP), headed by Clinton former chief of staff John Podesta, who also has been a key adviser to Obama. Soros’s charity, the Open Society Institute, in 2007 gave CAP $1.75 million and approved added grants of $1.25 million.

Obama’s collusion with Soros and his agenda-driven squadrons is an unfortunate turn from an administration that entered office promising unprecedented transparency in the White House. Soros certainly did his share for Obama. Now, with his backing for a billion-dollar oil loan to a Brazilian company, the president has proven more generous to Soros than to the American voters who put him in office.

Democrat Charles Rangel and Taxes: “Do as I Say, Not as I Do”

I confess to having a soft spot in my heart for old-VISITA UNIVISION.COM PARA MAS INFORMACION, Tammany Hall pols like New York Democrat Charles Rangel, current chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee – which is the same committee another loveable old rogue, disgraced Illinois Democrat Dan Rostenkowski, used to oversee back in the day. 

Both are from an era that’s long past, and for good reason, too.  Old Dan ended up doing time in the slam for a myriad of corrupt practices, including mail fraud, and Rangel could find himself going in the same direction, if current news reports are correct.

Now, I don’t know if Rangel himself is actually as corrupt and venal as Rostenkowski turned out to have been, but he certainly appears to be giving the king of backroom wheeling and dealing a run for his money lately.  From out of nowhere, it seems, Congressman Rangel has suddenly amended required financial disclosure forms going back to 2001 in an effort to “fix errors in his financial reporting,” according to one of his aides.

Byron York of the Washington Examiner, in an article entitled “The clock is ticking on tax cheat Charlie Rangel,” lays out fully the depth and breadth of Rangel’s serial tax cheating, which includes failing to report on assets he held which added up to more than 1 million dollars.

Of course, most are aware of Rangel’s “forgetting” to report income earned on certain properties he owns, including a Costa Rican villa from which he derived rental income.  After being caught and THEN fessing up to the IRS, the New York pol was allowed to just pay – with no interest or penalties — the 10 thousand dollars in federal income taxes he owed. 

What a deal!  Get caught cheating, pay what you should have paid in the first place but deliberately evaded (not avoided, which is different) paying and walk away with no penalty or threat of criminal prosecution hanging over your head.

I’m no huge fan of the IRS, so don’t mistake what I’m saying here as a defense of that government agency.  But I really am a proponent of obeying the laws that you helped to write, and as chairman of what’s widely recognized as one of the most powerful committees in the House of Representatives, Rangel helped author federal law dealing with tax cheats just like he, apparently, is turning out to be.

Hypocrisy, anyone?

At any rate, House Republicans — proving that even they can occasionally make out a tactical and strategic opportunity to smack the Democrats around when it presents itself — have been introducing legislation they’ve named the “Rangel Rule,” which would codify into law the same treatment for private citizens that the good Congressman from the Big Apple received at the hands of the IRS over his own tax evasion. 

California Republican Darrell Issa is now calling for Democrats to give Rangel the broom from at least his committee chairmanship, but I don’t see Nancy Pelosi — who’s proving to be the best thing to happen for Republican politics since Ronald Reagan — allowing that to happen anytime soon.

So…I’m just wondering, Nancy:  What happened to that promise to run the “… most honest, open and ethical Congress in history?”  If Rangel’s any indication of what you’ve been tolerating under your watch, the answer to the question should be fairly clear, right?

Obama’s Communist Advisor and His Billion-Dollar Army

Architects of a strategy for
forcing political change
through orchestrated crisis

I’m in NY where I’ll be headed to the Fox studios in a few hours to tape the “Glenn Beck Show.” The segment I’m doing will be aired Thursday as part of a week-long series called “The New Republic,” which is Glenn’s look at the radical agendas of the Obama Administration. Last night, with Pat Caddell as his guest, Glenn made the connection between the trillion-dollar deficits Obama is deliberately running up and the Cloward-Piven strategy devised by two Columbia radicals to bankrupt the welfare system in New York in order to create a crisis that would generate radical change.

Although the show failed to mention it, this was a strategy first identified in a book I wrote a couple of years ago with Richard Poe called The Shadow Party. That book described the coalition of Communist and anarchist radicals, Democratic Party honchos, and multi-billionaires that the malevolent George Soros put together before the 2004 presidential campaign. The Shadow Party is now the party in power and running the show.

Beck also focused on Van Jones, a self-described Communist who is now the Special Assistant to the President for “Green Jobs”. Beck ran some revealing clips on Jones, who is a Jeremiah Wright radical — a black racist and Ivy League elitist. Beck noted Jones’ radical “past” — actually he became a Communist in 1992 and for the next 10 years was a member of a communist party dedicated to “organizing a revolutionary movement.” In his 2007 book, The Green Economy, Jones blamed the devastation of Hurricane Katrina on white supremacy and the war in Iraq, which he blamed, in turn, on America’s “need for oil.”

Beck perspicaciously pointed out that Jones was the candidate of the Apollo Alliance — which is a communist party of the green movement composed of social justice and racial justice groups. As I pointed out in Unholy Alliance, social justice (and racial justice) is a term that, when used by far left groups, is a code for a Marxist future despite the phony lip service they frequently pay to the private sector when they address a broader public. The Apollo Alliance had proposed an $11 billion budget for green jobs. They got it from Obama. Beck also pointed out that the “Cash for Clunkers” stimulus program was proposed by Jones. He omitted one other salient fact: Jones was picked for his White House job by the Soros-funded and -organized Center for American Progress (John Podesta, its head, was the head of Obama’s transition team).

Beck asked rhetorically, was this all planned (rather than an ad hoc response to an actual “crisis”? The answer of course is yes. What is Jones’ real job? For an answer, check out Alinsky: “From the moment an organizer enters a community, he lives, dreams, eats, breathes, sleeps only one thing, and that is to build the mass power base of what he calls the army.” (Rules for Radicals, p. 113) Van Jones has entered the community of a trillion-dollar government and he is building his army.

"Now I'm truly scared."

A friend wrote this after she watched Fox News' Glenn Beck's series on the "alarming number of far-left radicals the president is surrounded by" – referring to some of the president's special advisers and "czars." President Barack Obama, my friend tells me, is "a true left-winger."

So, now she knows.

She didn't know after the president signed the $800 billion so-called "stimulus program." She didn't know after government takeovers/bailouts of banks, insurance companies and auto companies.

She didn't know after Obama campaigned in favor of protectionism by promising to unilaterally change free trade agreements, such as NAFTA, or after the inclusion of "Buy American" provisions in the "stimulus package."

She didn't know after Obama campaigned on government-run health care or after he said during the campaign that "if starting from scratch," he'd implement the Canadian single-payer system.

The perfect way to say "I told you so" to your lefty neighbors, WND's latest bumper sticker: "How's ...

She didn't know after Obama stated his goal to impose job-killing and price-hiking "cap-and-trade" business taxes to fight "manmade global warming." (Never mind the vigorous debate in the scientific community about the degree to which – or even whether – human activity is the cause and whether it makes more sense to deal with the effect of a slight warming than to undertake costly and likely ineffective measures to stop it.)

She didn't know after Obama's plans to "invest" to "create green jobs" of the future or after he moved oversight of the next census from the Department of Commerce to the White House (in order to increase the number of minorities so that government money can follow).

She didn't know after Obama sided with black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates and turned the professor's altercation with Cambridge police into a microcosm of the alleged widespread problem of unlawful "racial profiling" against blacks; after Obama spent 20 years in a church led by a smoke-coming-out-of-the-nose, America-bashing "spiritual adviser"; after Obama's selection of an attorney general who called America "cowardly" on matters of race; after the AG's refusal to indict members of the New Black Panther Party for seemingly clear voter intimidation; or after Obama's selection of a Supreme Court justice who many times claimed her gender and ethnicity make her superior to a "white male."

She didn't know after a proposal by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., to cap executive pay – for both those businesses that receive taxpayer money and those that don't; after Obama's promise for a government-provided "world-class education" to all who want it; or after the Cash for Clunkers program, under which A helped pay for the purchase of a car for B.

She didn't know after Obama promised to sit down "without preconditions" with enemies like the president of Iran and the head of North Korea; after Obama slammed Israel for building or expanding settlements, with nary a word about the daily rockets landing in Israel from the Gaza Strip; after proposals to reduce spending on missile-shield defense; after the AG appointed a "special counsel" to determine whether workers at the CIA – during the Bush administration – should be prosecuted for using Justice Department-approved techniques to interrogate terrorists (despite a previously undertaken investigation by career prosecutors and over the objection of the current CIA head); or that the term "war on terror" would no longer be used.

She didn't know after the public support of leaders in the Democratic Party – including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former presidential candidate John Kerry – for the reinstatement of the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" to provide ideological "balance" over the airwaves; or after Obama, while publicly opposing the reinstatement of the doctrine, appointed an FCC "diversity czar" to pursue the same objective: squelching conservative talk radio.

What does it take for some to wake up?

When Obama publicly asserts that some corporations, including "Big Oil" and medical insurance companies, make "obscene profits" (they don't compared with many other industries) and that his "compensation czar" will look into executive compensation, what does that tell you? When he argues that medical insurance companies need a "public option" (before public opinion forced him to back away from it) to keep them "honest," what does that say? When he arrogantly claims that fighting "global warming" and tackling the "health-care crisis" are not just moral imperatives but also necessary to keep our economy robust (?!), what does that show?

Voters last year elected a left-wing former "community organizer" with one of the Senate's most liberal voting records. He seeks to take the country – over the growing resistance of even those who voted for him – to an idealized world of government-guaranteed equality of outcomes. He wants a government-guaranteed "level playing field" of wealth redistribution via taxing those deemed to have too much.

Obama's goals are open, blatant and confidently asserted, backed by a filibuster-proof, supermajority, Democratic-controlled Congress. There is no Big Secret, no subterfuge, no bait-and-switch.

This is who and what he is.

OBAMA’S WHITE HOUSE... OR RATHER OBAMA’S MAD HOUSE?

IT MUST MARK A NEW LOW IN PRESIDENTIAL HISTORY when the fact that someone is a self-described Communist is not the most damning thing that can be said of a presidential adviser entrusted with federal power. Not only is Green Jobs Czar Van Jones a 9/11 Truther, but his organization believes Hurricane Katrina was a Bush conspiracy, as well. His unique combination of radicalism and irresponsibility provides a remarkable window into Barack Obama’s own radicalism.

After a string of embarrassing revelations, yesterday the press reported that Jones had joined such notable leftists as Cynthia McKinney, Ralph Nader, and Howard Zinn in signing the 9/11 Truth Statement (signature #46), which called for a federal investigation whether President Bush knew about – or perhaps colluded in – the destruction of the World Trade Center. This is somewhat ironic, since on the evening after 9/11, Jones stood in the streets with the Maoist-communist organization he founded – Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM) – to denounce the United States for having brought the disaster on itself.

To this author’s knowledge, it has not yet been reported that Van Jones also popularized the belief that Hurricane Katrina was a conspiracy. The organization Color of Change, which he co-founded after Katrina, waged a campaign to censure President George W. Bush, claiming: “He knew about the levees, and he knew about the Superdome. But he did nothing.”(Emphasis in original.) In 2006, Color of Change worked with MoveOn.org Civic Action to screen Spike Lee’s film When the Levees Broke, which features allegations the federal government dynamited the levees. As one report puts it, “Lee took no side on the issue” – originally popularized by Nation of Islam minister Louis Farrakhan – but Lee made it clear in other media that he believes in the theory.

The conspiracy would be consistent with Jones’ statement last January, that “white polluters and the white environmentalists are essentially steering poison into the people-of-color communities, because they don’t have a racial justice frame.”

In a 2005 blog on the Huffington Post, Jones wrote the hurricane had been exacerbated by Bush’s environmental policies and “deep contempt for poor African-Americans.”

How He Got There

Despite his radical views, he hardly sprang from a vacuum. When Jones won the San Francisco Foundation’s 2008 Community Leadership Award, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called him “one of the most innovative and strategic thinkers of our time. He is what I like to call a magnificent disrupter of the status quo.” San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom lauded him profusely. SFF, which presented Jones with a $10,000 honorarium, describes itself as “a vehicle for change.” Past SFF winners include former Congressman Ron Dellums.

Jones has also collected the Rockefeller Foundation’s “Next Generation Leadership” Fellowship and the Campaign for America’s Future “Paul Wellstone Award 2008,” and was named one of the George Lucas Foundation’s “Daring Dozen 2008.”

The grant-making institutions of the Left have promoted him from a petty street Maoist to a VISITA UNIVISION.COM PARA MAS INFORMACION at the right hand of power, because leftists are heavily invested in command economics and malicious conspiracy theories.

What Difference Does It Make?

Some on the Left have parried that it does not matter what Jones’ views were, because he will only work in the area of “Green jobs.” This is true, insofar as it would be if President Bush had appointed a Posse Comitatus Holocaust denier as head of the EPA. Jones’ recent actions provide precious little comfort.

Jones has not repudiated his Hate America views, has shown no remorse, nor even registered comprehension that the agenda Maoists and other revolutionaries advanced was insidious. As recently as two years ago, he hoped his own youthful rage would inspire other “racial justice activists.” In response to Hurricane Katrina, he posted an essay he wrote following the Rodney King riots in the hope “that somehow the observations from my own generation’s struggles – 15 years ago – will be of some aid and comfort to the newer generation of racial justice activists who are now mounting history’s stage.”

On the contrary, Jones has made clear he is switching tactics, not goals. “I’m willing to forgo the cheap satisfaction of the radical pose for the deep satisfaction of radical ends,” he said.

Further, Jones has made clear he intends to use his VISITA UNIVISION.COM PARA MAS INFORMACION in a Fabian manner, to incrementally socialize the U.S. economy:

Right now we say we want to move from suicidal gray capitalism to something eco-capitalism where at least we’re not fast-tracking the destruction of the whole planet. Will that be enough? No, it won’t be enough. We want to go beyond the systems of exploitation and oppression altogether. But, that’s a process and I think that’s what’s great about the movement that is beginning to emerge is that the crisis is so severe in terms of joblessness, violence and now ecological threats that people are willing to be both pragmatic and visionary. So the green economy will start off as a small subset and we are going to push it and push it and push it until it becomes the engine for transforming the whole society.

Knowing his background, President Obama placed him in a VISITA UNIVISION.COM PARA MAS INFORMACION to accomplish these “radical ends,” alongside the numerous other radicals the president appointed as czars. Those who insisted Obama’s longtime affiliations with Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, and others would be of no consequence have a large plate of crow to eat.

For the past several months, left-wing commentators have insisted Republicans distance themselves from those who believe Barack Obama was not born in the United States. They are now in the VISITA UNIVISION.COM PARA MAS INFORMACION of defending a man who has not repudiated his belief that George W. Bush may have issued the fatwa on the Twin Towers. Such a basic failure of judgment should disqualify him from office. Certainly, Barack Obama can’t believe there is a place for such thinking in his administration, can he?

If Jones is not promptly thrown under Rev. Wright’s bus, skeptics will have their answer.

Yesterday, news broke out that Barack Obama’s communist Green Czar was a 9-11 Truther. The administration much later in the day released a statement saying Van Jones was “not now or ever” involved in the 9-11 Truther movement.
Jones said the petition he signed in 2004 did not reflect his views and that he did not carefully review the language in the petition before agreeing to add his name..

Jones also founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, which joined in the vigil according to an Ella Baker Center press release from 2001. The press release contained this passage that quoted Jones:

“Anti-Arab hostility is already reaching a fever pitch as pundits and common people alike rush to judgment that an Arab group is responsible for this tragedy,” said Van Jones, national executive director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. “We fear that an atmosphere is being created that will result in official and street violence against Arab men, women and children.”

“Reclaiming Revolution” also blamed the U.S. for 9/11. A passage on page 45 (27 of the PDF file) reads:

That night, STORM and the other movement leaders expressed sadness and anger at the deaths of innocent working class people. We were angry, first and foremost, with the U.S. government, whose worldwide aggression had engendered such hate across the globe that working class people were not safe at home. We honored those who had lost their lives in the attack — and those who would surely lose their lives in subsequent U.S. attacks overseas.

Enough lies and excuses from this self professed communist in the Obama administration. He needs to step down or be fired!

Obama administration is finding itself in a most unpleasant situation and the results are going to be devastating. You may be aware that Obama has garnered interest from many left of center individuals with his appointment of numerous czars. Beyond czars being unconstitutional as they bypass Senate confirmation hearings, these czars have a more radical past than Obama himself and that should tell you something. Move out Jeremiah Wright, out of the way Bill Ayers, here comes Van Jones.

We first learned about Van Jones from Glenn Beck the popular conservative host on Fox News. Incidentally the discovery of Van Jones is accidental and most of the blame can go on the Obama administration, something I am sure they are now regretting. It all began after Beck accused Obama of being a racist, after Obama accused Cambridge police of acting “stupidly” involving an incident with his friend and professor, Robert Gates Jr. Shortly after, Beck found himself under the attack by a group called Color of Change – a very subtle non race baiting name with a dubious mission statement of “strengthen Black America's political voice” – and noticed his advertisers pulling out. I think it’s pretty instructive what his past is...it’s the same sort of philosophy, the idea that government ought to be reordering society in accordance with some utopian vision that failed with communism and socialism, and will fail with this green jobs idea.

Last week, a video emerged of Van Jones in a Berkeley, calling Republicans assholes, because that was the best explanation he could muster as to how Republicans continued to push legislation despite their dwindling numbers. Watch the entire video, there is a very amusing moment when a brave Berkeley student suggests that some of Van Jones’ policies sound an awful lot like Marxist propaganda, gee, really? After the uproarious laughter died down, he finally countered the question by asking “how is that capitalism working out for you?”. Nice. Granted he was not employed by the “American people” just yet, but because this took place one month before we can probably assume that he already discussed this with Obama. Van Jones issued a public analogy as the “Republicans are assholes” comment went viral and brought the Communist into the public spotlight.

This is where it got really ugly.

A well known blogger and a site I visit regularly, Gateway Pundit, somehow managed to discover Van Jones was at one point (or still is) a ‘9/11 Truther’ suggesting that he believes our government was involved in the worst terrorist attack on this nation’s history. As this story was gaining steam, the administration within hours released a statement suggesting that “Jones may have signed some petition in 2004, but it did not reflect his true opinion”. Too bad for Jones, Gateway Pundit found Jones’ signature on a 2002 petition! A big difference as this suggests a deep seated hate of the Bush administration and not a dissatisfaction with the 9/11 Commission. In conclusion, we have a deeply partisan conspiracy nut in one of the highest levels of government. Fantastic.

While many can shrug off his comment about Republicans, his involvement with the ‘Truthers’ will not and cannot be ignored. Worse still, it raises three very important questions.

1. Does Obama himself subscribe to the 9-11 conspiracy theories and is he a Truther himself?
   
2. If Obama is not Truther,  what kind of scrutiny is applied to these czars and how can he justify employing Van Jones?
   
3. How many other Czars have an equally radical past? 

America voted for a man whose past, friends, relationships and involvements were radicalized, dubious and scary.  So what is more amusing?  American voters reaping what they sow or the guy appointed to clean up America polluting it even further?  You decide.

What happened to President Obama? His wax wings having melted, he is the man who fell to earth. What happened to bring his popularity down further than that of any new president in polling history save Gerald Ford (post-Nixon pardon)?

The conventional wisdom is that Obama made a tactical mistake by farming out his agenda to Congress and allowing himself to be pulled left by the doctrinaire liberals of the Democratic congressional leadership. But the idea of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi pulling Obama left is quite ridiculous. Where do you think he came from, this friend of Chávista ex-terrorist William Ayers, of PLO apologist Rashid Khalidi, of racialist inciter Jeremiah Wright?

But forget the character witnesses. Just look at Obama's behavior as president, beginning with his first address to Congress. Unbidden, unforced and unpushed by the congressional leadership, Obama gave his most deeply felt vision of America, delivering the boldest social democratic manifesto ever issued by a U.S. president. In American politics, you can't get more left than that speech and still be on the playing field.

In a center-right country, that was problem enough. Obama then compounded it by vastly misreading his mandate. He assumed it was personal. This, after winning by a mere seven points in a year of true economic catastrophe, of an extraordinarily unpopular Republican incumbent, and of a politically weak and unsteady opponent. Nonetheless, Obama imagined that, as Fouad Ajami so brilliantly observed, he had won the kind of banana-republic plebiscite that grants caudillo-like authority to remake everything in one's own image.

Accordingly, Obama unveiled his plans for a grand makeover of the American system, animating that vision by enacting measure after measure that greatly enlarged state power, government spending and national debt. Not surprisingly, these measures engendered powerful popular skepticism that burst into tea-party town-hall resistance.

Obama's reaction to that resistance made things worse. Obama fancies himself tribune of the people, spokesman for the grass roots, harbinger of a new kind of politics from below that would upset the established lobbyist special-interest order of Washington. Yet faced with protests from a real grass-roots movement, his party and his supporters called it a mob -- misinformed, misled, irrational, angry, unhinged, bordering on racist. All this while the administration was cutting backroom deals with every manner of special interest -- from drug companies to auto unions to doctors -- in which favors worth billions were quietly and opaquely exchanged.

"Get out of the way" and "don't do a lot of talking," the great bipartisan scolded opponents whom he blamed for creating the "mess" from which he is merely trying to save us. If only they could see. So with boundless confidence in his own persuasiveness, Obama undertook a summer campaign to enlighten the masses by addressing substantive objections to his reforms.

Things got worse still. With answers so slippery and implausible and, well, fishy, he began jeopardizing the most fundamental asset of any new president -- trust. You can't say that the system is totally broken and in need of radical reconstruction, but nothing will change for you; that Medicare is bankrupting the country, but $500 billion in cuts will have no effect on care; that you will expand coverage while reducing deficits -- and not inspire incredulity and mistrust. When ordinary citizens understand they are being played for fools, they bristle.

After a disastrous summer -- mistaking his mandate, believing his press, centralizing power, governing left, disdaining citizens for (of all things) organizing -- Obama is in trouble.

Let's be clear: This is a fall, not a collapse. He's not been repudiated or even defeated. He will likely regroup and pass some version of health insurance reform that will restore some of his clout and popularity.

But what has occurred -- irreversibly -- is this: He's become ordinary. The spell is broken. The charismatic conjurer of 2008 has shed his magic. He's regressed to the mean, tellingly expressed in poll numbers hovering at 50 percent.

For a man who only recently bred a cult, ordinariness is a great burden, and for his acolytes, a crushing disappointment. Obama has become a politician like others. And like other flailing presidents, he will try to salvage a cherished reform -- and his own standing -- with yet another prime-time speech.

But for the first time since election night in Grant Park, he will appear in the most unfamiliar of guises -- mere mortal, a treacherous transformation to which a man of Obama's supreme self-regard may never adapt.
