OBAMA SPENT HIS SUMMER VACATION- DAY ONE: KILL POWER PLANTS, KILL JOBS
Townhall.com ^ | August 21, 2011 | John Ransom
Prepare for your electric rates to go up, Chevy Jolt drivers.
Under new interpretations of old rules, the EPA will shortly be forcing the shutdown of about 20 percent of coal-generated electric capacity in the United States. Since coal generates about half the electricity demanded in the US, the country will have to find other, more expensive ways of making up about ten percent of electric capacity at a time that the administration wants electric to be the clean fuel of choice.
Maybe Obama doesn’t understand that he can’t import electricity from Brazil.
In addition to the loss of generating capacity, the Commerce Department estimates that the new rules could kill up to 60,000 jobs, says Heritage, while an industry trade group says that the rules will cost $129 billion, according to the Washington Post.
During the 2008 presidential campaign then-Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden both claimed that if elected they would institute policies that make it cost prohibitive for coal-fired plants to operate in the United States.
Looks like this is one promise they’ll keep.
“So, if somebody wants to build a coal plant, they can,” Obama told the San Francisco Chronicle in a clip the paper likely tried to suppress, “it’s just that it will bankrupt them, because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.”
While the Obama campaign scrambled at the time to say that their comments were taken out of context, Mike Carey, president of the Ohio Coal Association issued a statement that rings true today.
“Senator Obama,” said Carey in November 2008, “has revealed himself to be nothing more than a short- sighted, inexperienced politician willing to say anything to get a vote. But today, the nation's coal industry and those who support it have a better understanding of his true mission, to 'bankrupt' our industry, put tens of thousands out of work and cause unprecedented increases in electricity prices.”

The administration is using new interpretations of long-ago passed emission standards- standards that no administration has tried to enforce- along with vague, esoteric “visibility” standards to target older, coal-fired plants. Critics say that the EPA fails to make a case that the plants present a danger to public health or visibility, as the EPA seemed to admit when they issued a stay against adoption of the rules earlier this year.
“The stringency and cost of the new regulations provoked an outpouring of protest and some 5,800 comments” writes Heritage, “citing technical and statutory errors. Some 21 governors and more than 100 Members of Congress also raised objections. Ultimately, EPA officials were forced to acknowledge their failure to ‘calculate standards that fully reflected operational reality.’”
But as Obama tries to shore up his base of support amid blistering criticism from progressive groups, look for Obama to continue to use backdoor regulatory means to enforce, ignore or otherwise interpret laws to benefit special interests that support the president’s agenda.
Earlier this year Obama scrapped Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, instructed the Justice Department to ignore enforcement of the Defense of Marriage Act and just this week announced that the administration would be suspending deportation of illegal aliens in an effort to avoid enforcement of immigration laws.
Obama has been subject to criticism from Hispanic leaders, who are still stuck on the Democrat plantation, after the administration bragged that they deported more illegal immigrants than the Bush administration.
In addition, the president has issued more job-killing regulations than any of his predecessors- at least 75 of them through mid-year 2011, at a cost of $38 billion just for adoption. Total economic costs of federal regulations are sky-rocketing to $1.75 trillion says the federal government’s own Small Business Administration.
In short, the coal group got it right in November 2008.
President Obama has revealed himself to be nothing more than a short- sighted, inexperienced politician willing to do anything, saying anything and pay anything to get a vote. Even while on vacation, day one.

Observing the president of the United States over the last couple of weeks, however, Mike proved unable to contain himself. He sat down, wrote this essay, and sent it to us.]
Mr. President, please don’t get well soon.
From the opinion polls to the depressed state of the stock markets to growing contempt of our enemies (and friends) around the world to the stunning lack of new ideas for getting out of our current economic predicament to the apparent impending failure of your signature universal healthcare initiative, it has become obvious even to members of your own party that you are in over your head.
You know it too, Mr. President, if your endless golf games and vacations – not to mention your increasingly incoherent public appearances – are any indication of your state of mind.
Looking ahead, you must be dreading the next eighteen months of convention protests, daily attacks by the GOP nominee, and trying to defend a miserable economic record during the debates. It’s going to be awful, especially since the only arrow left in your quiver is to go on the attack in the dirtiest possible ways: race, class envy, and religion. You must know that even if you do manage to win, it will be a pyrrhic victory, with your image so damaged – and the economy still so crippled – that your second term will make the first look like a picnic. Even successful presidents have rotten second terms; just imagine what yours is going to be like.
So, MR. PRESIDENT, I HAVE A SUGGESTION: RESIGN
I don’t mean that in a flippant, or even partisan, way. Rather, let me explain how a smart resignation, properly done, can be a ‘win’ for all parties involved – not least yourself.
First, let me establish the basis for my argument by pointing out that, whatever your hopes, the economy isn’t going to turn around and save you. The only economic ‘miracles’ are those that result from a society dedicating itself fully to certain economic realities. That isn’t going to happen under your administration. Everybody in the U.S., (well, maybe not Paul Krugman), knows what it will take to turn our economy around: low taxes, a reversal of the runaway expansion of government, the unleashing of domestic energy sources, lifting the crushing weight of too many government regulations, and establishing a predictable economic environment that allows companies large and small to make long-term plans and that supports entrepreneurship and venture capital.
Even your fellow leftists and Progressives know that this is the prescription for restoring America’s economic health. I’m pretty sure that you know it too.

But there is a big difference between knowing something and being willing to do it. It is obvious that you aren’t willing to take these steps, not just because it would render your first two years in office into one giant mistake, but because it would repudiate almost everything in which you have ever believed, every hero you’ve ever had, and every dream you’ve ever pursued.
Even with what little we know about you and your past, Mr. President, it is hard to believe you would ever accept such a public about-face, much less its implied confession of utter failure. And even if you did, no one would believe you – they would assume it is a lie or trick. At this point there is simply no way that you personally can remove volatility from our economy. So, that means only one thing: it’s not going to get any better.
And with Operation Gunwalker out there, as well as everything from Tony Rezko to the army of Birthers, it’s likely to get a whole lot worse, both for you and the United States of America.
Now, consider the alternative. You step down. Undefeated. The Democrat party, currently faced with the prospect of, at best, devastating losses in 2012, and at worst, a generation wandering the wilderness, now has a chance to mount a comeback. Biden isn’t going to run again, and being Old School, he’ll craft some kind of compromise deal with the GOP House that will accomplish most of what you can’t bring yourself to do. If the beginnings of a turn-around can be achieved by November 2012, the Dems might be able to salvage something to build upon – and your tenure will be remembered as only a brief, and unpleasant, interregnum.
As for the Republican party, it is going to win. As much as you hate the very idea, it will happen. Barring a historic meltdown or scandal, the next president of the United States will be a Republican. And a good thing too, because the last five years have taught us that the Democratic party, at least regarding financial discipline, has gone utterly insane -- and if left in
control will destroy this great country. The Democrat party needs a serious scouring, a lot of introspection, and a major dose of reality. It started with the last election, and it is only going to get worse. Do you really want to be center stage for that?
If it is any consolation, consider the box you will leave for your successor. He (or she) will either inherit a disastrous economy that will take years to fix and without the ability to blame you as you did George W. Bush; or a limping, slowly recovering recovery that creates only widespread frustration and disappointment. Either way, a lot of folks will begin to look back upon you with nostalgia. Besides, the GOP has its own impending reckoning between its Inside-the-Beltway statists and the Tea Partiers (BTW, before you die you’ll likely recognize that the Tea Party was the best thing that could happen, even for you and your fellow progressives.)
Publicado: 08-20-2011 10:08 PM
Finally, and if for no other reason, you need to resign for the sake of Progressivism. For progressives, the last two years have been a lot like the dog that finally caught the car: victory has only shown the hollowness, even the danger, of your political philosophy. I remember years ago interviewing Molly Ivins, and listening to her rave about the glories of Wilsonian and Rooseveltian Progressivism. Her eyes glistened with the image in her mind of a better world, run by government experts, intent on perfect fairness and equality.
Today, under your leadership, Progressivism is all-but dead as a viable political philosophy. Once in power, as in the past, it quickly showed its totalitarian face – and the danger of placing our liberty in the hands of Big Government, Big Labor, Big Business, Big Anything. Five more years of this and Progressivism will be dead for another three generations. And if you don’t want to be the guy blamed in every faculty lounge in America for killing it, you need to get Progressivism out of the spotlight for a while to recover. And there’sonly way to do that.
So, how do you resign without the accompanying humiliation of defeat (Carter), surrender (Johnson) or impeachment (Nixon)? You get sick. Real sick. Have-to-nobly-leave-office-for-the-sake-of-the-cou
Needless to say, pulling this off won’t be easy. The good news is that your appalling lack of candor about your past could be helpful now. There’s always been talk, especially from the tin-foil hat types, about your health records, your perpetual skinniness, that suggestion of cranial scars when you get a short haircut. Now pick one and use it to your advantage. The golf games mysteriously stop. Medical specialists are spotted rushing to the White House.
You have a coughing fit during a press conference. A photo is leaked of you in the Oval Office that suggests a half-hidden IV tube. Nothing big, nothing conclusive . . .and then, the heart-rending resignation speech, the shots of people weeping on the streets of America and around the world. You announce a bipartisan transition team, then heroically depart to fight your illness as Joe Biden calls for a national day of prayer.
Does this sound impossible to pull off? Will you be exposed? Well, has anybody found your college grades yet? No, even this column would be seen as a cynical and lucky guess. And you know the media will roll for you – frankly, they’ll be relieved.
No, you need to keep your eye on the prize.
Think Gorbachev: nobody remembers that he not only ran the most murderous empire in history, but then blundered so badly he inadvertently destroyed it . . .and now he is a beloved figure, rich and much in demand, and his name most associated with World Peace.
Think about it: a couple years lying low, a few shadowy photographs in a bathrobe walking with a cane, a couple ‘close calls’ that provoke candlelight vigils across the land, and then a public recovery as the world cheers.
After that, it’s the Presidential Library and Peace Center in Honolulu, the UN Secretary-Generalship, awards and honors without responsibilities or blame, a forty year victory lap and mile-long lines paying respects to your remains in the Capitol. Isn’t the First Black President better than the Worst Modern President? Doesn’t a couple years off sound better than riding around in that big black coffin being yelled at by Tea Partiers? Wouldn’t you prefer some other Dem candidate – Hillary? – be slaughtered in the next presidential election?
Think about it, Mr. President, and make your decision soon. Time is short . . .and you aren’t looking real well, if you know what I mean . . .

OBITUARIO DE U.S.A.
In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinborough, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:
"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from
the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy,
(which is) always followed by a dictatorship."
"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage."
The Obituary follows:
Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota , points out some interesting facts concerning the last Presidential election:
Number of States won
by: Obama: 19 McCain: 29
Square miles of land won by: Obama: 580,000
Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million McCain: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Obama: 13.2 McCain: 2.1
Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory McCain won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.
Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."
Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.
If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegal's - and they vote - then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years.
If you in favor of this, then by all means pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom..
This is truly scary! Of course we are not a democracy, we are a Constitutional Republic . Someone should point this out to Obama.
Of course we know he and too many others pay little attention to The Constitution. There couldn't be more at stake than on Nov 2012.

CONSERVATISM'S RISING STARS SPARK STUDENTS at Young America's Foundation Conference
by Ron Meyer
America’s young people face harsh realities resulting from the Obama administration’s policies. Youth unemployment has reached a 30-year high at 17.3%, and The Huffington Post reports that 85% of college grads are moving back in with their parents.
Student loan debt is soaring to record heights, and the national debt—which is already damaging the economy—threatens to make Generation "Y" fiscal servants to the government.
Young people are ready to rebel against the Left. The Obama administration’s approval rating among 18- to 29-year-olds continues to plunge, and America’s youth are eager for alternative ideas.
To provide such ideas, Young America’s Foundation (YAF) hosted the rising leaders in the Conservative Movement—including Senators Marco Rubio and Mike Lee, Congressmen Allen West and Jim Jordan, and best-selling author Ann Coulter—at the 33rd annual National Conservative Student Conference (NCSC).
The conference, held at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., from Aug. 1 to 6, had 350 participants from 25 states and six countries, and was a part of Young America’s Foundation’s Reagan 100 celebration, a yearlong initiative honoring the 100th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s birth. C-SPAN was on hand to cover several events live.
Sen. Marco Rubio headlined the Reagan 100 banquet on the first full day of conference activities. Students connected to Rubio’s message embracing the American Dream for the next generation.
“I encourage you to remain involved, because the decisions we are making will be permanent,” Rubio said to a packed and excited banquet hall.
Foundation student activist Jiesi Zhao noted, “Marco Rubio is so energetic and fresh, and he just gets it.”
Rubio wasn’t the only young leader firing up the crowds. Speeches from HUMAN EVENTS editor Jason Mattera, Fox News panelist Stephen Hayes, CNN contributor Dana Loecsh and National Review’s Jonah Goldberg excited students with edgy messages that directly related to the conference’s college-age audience.
Mattera even busted out a few jokes. “Sarah Palin does love animals—the way most Americans do: killed, fried and ready to eat!”
Beyond his speech, Mattera was also a part of an investigative journalism panel with Project Veritas’ James O’Keefe, who is known for his video stings exposing the corruption of ACORN and NPR.
Publicado: 08-21-2011 08:52 PM
O’Keefe and Mattera, both masters of online video stings, conveyed how students can use new media to forward the cause of freedom. Mattera suggested that students can learn more by interning with Young America’s Foundation’s National Journalism Center, which has a special program dedicated to investigative journalism.
While students loved hearing from people in the media, they particularly appreciated the remarks from the public policy leaders who spoke to the conference. Conservatives including Sen. Mike Lee, Rep. Allen West, and Rep. Jim Jordan addressed issues ranging from the debt ceiling to the weakening of America’s national defense.
These officials, three of whom are freshmen in Congress, inspired the conference attendees to care about what’s happening in government. Whether the subject was the debt burden being passed to America’s youth or the terrible job situation, these leaders conveyed that only more conservative activism can solve this generation’s challenges.
Stephen K. Bannon, director of new film about Sarah Palin's rise as governor of Alaska—The Undefeated— echoed this message and roused students with his anti-establishment theme, warning that liberalism is endangering future generations. Bannon also shared insights he had learned about Palin during the filming of his movie.
Foundation mainstays Bay Buchanan, Joseph Phillips, Rich Lowry, KT McFarland, Marc Thiessen, Pat Coyle and Kate Obenshain armed students with the ammunition they’ll need to fight the activism battles on their campuses.
"The Campus Conservative Battleplan," YAF’s guide to activism filled with monthly activities, was also distributed to all the students. To fight the Left with sufficient intellectual firepower, CPAC director Chris Maligisi, National Review Online editor Kathryn Lopez and Fund for American Studies President Roger Ream participated in a book panel recommending classic conservative literature.
And despite what liberals say, the Conservative Movement has modern intellectuals. Princeton’s Robert George, New York Times best-seller list authors Burt Folsom and Larry Schweikart, and the Wall Street Journal’s Steve Moore dazzled students with their vast, knowledge-filled speeches on history and economics.
The second-to-last speaker, HUMAN EVENTS' own legal analyst Ann Coulter, ignited the crowd with her witty one-liners attacking liberal hypocrisy. She left students ready to counter the Left without moderation and without fear.
The Conservative Movement’s rising stars jolted these students into wanting to engage their peers on campus, and the activism during this coming school year will demonstrate the efficacy and success of this conference.
Ron Meyer is a program officer for Young America's Foundation (YAF). YAF introduces young people to conservatism through lectures and conferences across the country, and preserves the Reagan Ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif. Ron has appeared on Fox News and been published with the Christian Science Monitor, Yahoo! News, AOL News, HUMAN EVENTS, and the Daily Caller.

BARACK OBAMA: HE’S COME UNDONE
TRIBUNE ON LINE
Sunday, August 21, 2011
The wheels are off the Obama bus. It’s up on the cinder blocks on some rental property in Martha’s Vineyard this weekend. It is the end of the summer of discontent for a president who’s clearly in over his head and whose wallowing is most unbecoming.
Mr. Obama’s economic policy prescriptions, textbook Keynesian mumbo jumbo, have failed. History would have been instructive had only he been learned in the discipline. Obviously, he’s not. Next month, he’ll return with yet another chapter of the novella best titled “Hocus Pocus.”
Policy failures aside, we can only wonder if America also should be worried about the mental state of this president. Just prior to his Midwestern bus tour, at a private New York fundraiser, Obama’s reported to have likened opposition to his presidency to the persecution of Martin Luther King. Then, on tour, his maudliness plunged deeper as he compared his plight to the sufferings of Abraham Lincoln.
As Gettysburg College history professor Allen C. Guelzo reminded in National Review Online, Mr. Lincoln rose to the challenge and exhibited greatness in his leadership. But, “In our current national agony ... we have come to see a littleness, not a greatness, in Barack Obama. And it is not for him that we feel sorry, but for ourselves.”
For it is a tragedy of our own making.
