Walking in: Rajasegaran being escorted to the court in Klang.KLANG: A motor workshop employee has been charged with abusing a three-year-old boy.
T. Rajasegaran, 32, claimed trial to a charge under Section 31(1) (a) of the Child Act 2001 and could be jailed 10 years or fined up to RM20,000 or both if found guilty.
Magistrate Suhaima Mohd Noor denied bail upon DPP Munirah Shamsudin’s request.
Munirah had requested that bail not be granted to protect the child as the boy and Rajasegaran lived in the same house.
Rajasegaran had earlier pleaded guilty and the court was stood down for Munirah to prepare the facts of the case.
However, when the court resumed about an hour-and-half later, Rajasegaran pleaded not guilty instead.
The boy, who is Rajasegaran’s second wife’s son from a previous relationship, was also present in court with his pregnant mother.
Rajasegaran is accused of allegedly battering the child with a rice ladle and a murukku mould in September in a house in Kapar, Klang.
In pleading for bail, Rajasegaran said he earned between RM700 and RM800 a month and had two wives and four children, aged between five years and eight months (including the allegedly abused child), to support.
He added that both his wives were unemployed and his second wife was pregnant.
Suhaima ordered Rajasegaran to remain under detention and fixed Jan 15 for mention of the case.
She also ordered him to appoint his def-ence counsel.
Outside the courtroom, the boy’s mother scolded media photographers for wanting to take photos of her and her son.
She also told onlookers that there was no one to take care of her now that Rajasegaran was under detention.
The accused’s first wife, who had reportedly recorded the beating, was not present in court.

At a Magistrate's Court here on Tuesday, he initially pleaded guilty then changed his plea and claimed trial after he was charged with ill-treating the boy, who is his second wife's son from a previous relationship.
He was accused of hurting the boy with a rice ladle and a muruku mould in Sept, 2012 in a house in Kapar near here.
Magistrate Suhaima Mohd Noor denied bail given that the victim and accused lived in the same house.
She fixed Jan 15 for mention of the case.
