Noted economist Michelle Obama has a better vacation wardobe than you do

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you’re having a lovely vacation. Because I’m not actually on vacation. Unless you consider drinking coconut coffee from the Keurig while I work in my office a vacation. Because I don’t. At any rate, I saved the US taxpayers nearly $4 million by not being First Lady and flying off for a 17-day vacation in Hawaii on the taxpayers dime. You can thank me later.

Michelle Obama, noted supporter of the 99% and champion of the poor, on the other hand, is reportedly draining taxpayer funds to finance a massive year-end festival of relaxation on the sunny shores of Oahu while the rest of us slave away so that we aren’t unemployed come her husband’s fourth year as President.

And don’t think she’s dressing like a regular tourist while she’s there, either, you peons. As she accompanied Barack and family to church services on the Kaneohe Bay Marine Base on Sunday, Michelle sported a Resort Collection Sophie Theallet sundress (thumbnail), which, at the time it was purchased in late 2009, cost between $1K and $2K. Similar dresses from the Resort 2012 collection sell for that much and more.

But fear not, oh children of the proletariat. Should you like to dress like the First Lady, but fear having to go on food stamps after wasting your entire unemployment check on a sundress, you can rent a Sophie Theallet dress from internet retailer Rent the Runway (you have to give it back), for ....

You might, however, be able to cash in your monthly allotment for her bargain basement skirt.

In this ubiquitous politician-phot0-with-a-baby-on-Christmas (ever more important considering that Barack can magically speak to babies), Michelle Obama is sporting a Comme des Garcons, 3/4 length printed skirt with a bag waist. This skirt is typical for CdG, and can retail anywhere for up to $1K, with similar items for sale at SSense – an internet designer outlet – for $450 (down from a peak of $950). Or, if you’re like me and can occasionally shop in the kids department because you were born without any shape whatsoever, you can snag a similar skirt from Comme des Garcons kids collection for $495 new. Unfortunately, since the skirts are limited edition and only available to busy and important people, you’ll have to pre-order yours for delivery in March.

It will however, look better on someone who isn’t drawing the waist of the skirt up to the bottom of their boobs. And frugal fashionistas can obviously thank Al Gore for saving us from global warming, thus allowing them to wear their extravagant purchase year round.

And, come to think of it, is making this “vacation” sort of like Hawaii.

Sort of.

P.S. HOLY SH*T ON A STICK! We got a Drudge link!!! And here we thought we could spend the whole freaking day in pajamas watching a Tudors marathon on the BBC…but noooooooo. We’re approving comments as they come in!

“Let them eat surimi!”

It’s all so weird. It’s all so unseemly. Multi-millionaires begging for $3 and selling themselves off in raffles.

The email Michelle Obama sent to me:

This holiday has felt a bit like one last long, deep breath before we plunge into 2012.

This time next year, I don’t want us to have any regrets. I want to be able to say we rose to the task, and got it done. We’ve all got some work to do right now.

Over the next 11 months we’ve got an organization to grow, voters to register, and people to get fired up.

I hope you’ll close out this year by donating $3 or more now to help make sure we’re ready for the next one:

Thank you so much, and happy new year,

P.S. — Also, when you donate today, you are automatically entered for a chance to be one of three supporters to have dinner with Barack and me.

She vacations in Hawaii each year at a cost of $4 million, takes her own jets to vacation destinations all at taxpayer expense, wears $500 Lanvin sneakers to help the poor, $2000 Mexican tablecloths on vacation, and she wants us to to rise to the task and send her $3 so she won’t have any regrets.

Barack sent me this email:

It’s not all that often that Michelle and I get to host a casual meal with friends.

That’s one of the reasons we’re both excited about the upcoming dinner with three supporters and your guests.

It’s the first one we’ve ever done like this together, and we’d love to have you and whoever you choose to join us.

Chip in $3 or whatever you can today — and you’ll automatically be entered to be one of our dinner guests.

I enjoy these dinners not just because they’re a way to connect with supporters across the country.

They also say a lot about what kind of campaign we’re running.

We don’t take a dime from D.C. lobbyists or special-interest PACs — never have and never will. Instead, we believe in the kind of politics that gives everyone a seat at the table — so we’re literally offering these seats at dinner to folks who are willing to step forward and be a part of it.

There are just a few days left to add your name for a chance to be one of our guests at the next dinner, and help build this campaign before 2012 finally arrives.

Make a donation of $3 or whatever you can today

As soon as he was done saddling us with a trillion dollar failed stimulus, Barack Obama sucked down a meal of $100 per serving Wagyu beef.

When he got to Hawaii, Obama headed right for Morimoto’s. There are countless sushi restaurants in Hawaii but few as tony as Morimoto’s, where the Oyster Foie Gras runs $22 per piece.

Then he ate at Alan Wong’s, another exclusive locale, and it’s estimated that he spent at least $260, or 13 weeks’ worth of middle class tax cuts.

The Obama’s, who deny themselves nothing in the face of a poor economy (“Middle Class Warriors” as Keith Koffler describes them), the Obama’s, who eat the best food at the best at the best restaurants at our expense, invite YOU to send $3 so you can share a “casual meal” with them.

Waygu beef and martinis for them, beer and pizza for their supporters.

That’s as good a metaphor for this Presidency as it gets.

A couple of days ago Mitt Romney compared Barack Obama to Marie Antoinette:

“When the president’s characterization of our economy was, ‘It could be worse,’ it reminded me of Marie Antoinette: ‘Let them eat cake,’ ” Romney told The Huffington Post in an interview Thursday.

With the Obamas dining on the finest food, enjoying the best vacations, not letting Presidentin’ get in the way of his 91 rounds of golf, Romney’s got a point.

It’s good to be Queen.

Michelle Obama’s Spain Vacation Cost Taxpayers $467,585

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and fights government corruption, announced today that it obtained documents from the United States Air Force and the United States Secret Service detailing costs associated with Michelle Obama’s controversial August 2010 vacation to Spain. According to a Judicial Watch analysis, the records indicate a total combined cost of at least $467,585.

Judicial Watch obtained the Secret Service records pursuant to an August 2010 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. (The agency notified Judicial Watch that it withheld 78 pages of responsive records in their entirety.) Judicial Watch obtained the U.S. Air Force records pursuant to a March 5, 2012, FOIA lawsuit.

The following are highlights from the U.S. Air Force records, which indicate a total cost of $213,124.15:

According to U.S. Department of Defense’s 2010 published hourly rates, the total cost of flying Michelle Obama and her guests from Camp Andrews to Malaga and then to Mallorca and back to the United States was $199,323.75. This is based on approximately 17 hours and 15 minutes of total flying time. The 15-member flight crew stayed at Tryp Guadalmar, a nearby motel. Lodging cost was $10,290.60 and car rental cost was $2,633.50. Food cost was $876.30, including $57.68 for four bottles of maple syrup and a package of pancake mix.

The U.S. Air Force concealed the number of civilian passengers who accompanied Mrs. Obama on the five-day trip, citing an exemption to FOIA law. (The New York Times previously reported that Mrs. Obama brought along one of her daughters and “two friends and four of their daughters, as well as a couple of aides and a couple of advance staff members.”)

Secret Service records, meanwhile, show that the costs to the agency for the vacation were $254,461.20. This total includes $26,670.61 for a chauffeur tour of Costa del Sol and $50,078.78 for a travel planning company SET P&V, S.L. (George Soros is 50% owner of the travel company.) Taxpayers also paid the bill for separate lodging for a dog and its handler.

As I noted earlier this week, from Jodi Kantor’s The Obamas, pages 90–91:

Even the president made uncomfortable jokes about why his wife needed so many things. Behind the scenes, aides said, the Obamas were concerned about money: the president’s books could only sell so many copies, and it would be years until he could write more and the first lady could write her own. From vacation rental homes big enough to accommodate the Secret Service to all the personal entertaining they did at the White House, their lifestyle had grown fearsomely expensive.

Lest someone claim the book is an anti-Obama smear job, Kantor began covering the Obamas for the New York Times in 2007 and based the book on multiple interviews with 33 different White House staffers.

And, of course, last week, when asked about the GSA scandal, Romney told me this.

“I think the example starts at the top,” Romney said. “People have to see that the president is  taking elaborate vacations and spending in a way that is inconsistent with the state of the overall economy and the state of the American family.”

All total, with Christmas and summer holidays included, the Colorado jaunt is trip number 16 for Mrs. Obama since the family moved to the White House. No public events are scheduled for the first lady’s visit to Aspen.

Michelle Obama and 40 of her friends paid for personal expenses, such as hotels and meals themselves.
But the U.S. taxpayer would have paid for the 68-strong security detail, personal staff and use of presidential jet Air Force Two.
Payment for the secret service team ran at around $281 each - nearly $98,000 for the duration of the summer break.
Use of Air Force Two comes in at $149,900 for the round trip, not including time on the ground.
Mrs Obama's personal staff, of which there were an unknown number, should also be taken into account

According to the Hawaii Reporter the costs were:
$63,000 on an early flight bringing Mrs Obama and the children to Hawaii ahead of the President
$1,000,000 on Mr Obama’s return trip from Washington on Air Force One
$16,000 to rent nearby homes for Secret Service and Navy Seals
$134,000 for 24 White House staff to stay at the Moana Hotel
$251,000 in police overtime
$10,000 for an ambulance to be on hand at all times

Michelle Obama and her daughters stayed at the
Sebastian hotel on Vail Mountain, where rooms cost more than $2,400 for multi-bedroom suites.
The family appear to have flown there on Air Force Two. They were escorted to the resort by about a dozen vehicles, including 15 state and local law enforcement officers.

The Blue Heron Farm estate, where the Obama family stayed, rents for about $50,000 a week.
Michelle, Sasha and Malia Obama flew to the estate just hours before the president to make the most of the holiday - again, incurring extra flight costs.
According to U.S. News and World Report, the Coast Guard was required to keep ships floating near the property. The presidential helicopter and jet remain at the ready and security agents will be on 24-hour duty.

According to the Hawaii Reporter the costs were:
$63,000 on an early flight bringing Mrs Obama and the children to Hawaii ahead of the President but add security and personnel for a total of about $100,000
$3,271,622 on Mr Obama’s return trip from Washington on Air Force One
$151,200 to rent nearby homes for Secret Service and Navy Seals
$72,216 for 24 White House staff to stay at the Moana Hotel
